Biography
His passport name is Oleh Romanovych Shumei. Onstage he writes the name in capitals: SHUMEI. By training he is a flutist, but first and foremost a person with his own vocal and original songwriting, with the rest of the instruments serving as an additional arsenal. Born on 9 February 2002 in Dolyna, Ivano-Frankivsk region.
The family is musical across three generations. The grandfather played, the father plays, and now the son. Oleh's father, by the way, is also a professional flutist. Music school was not a choice but a natural extension of the family context. At six the young Oleh was already on competition stages and taking grand prix awards. After eighth grade he closed the school in Dolyna and moved to Lviv. There he enrolled at the Solomiya Krushelnytska Specialised Music Boarding School. He mastered the transverse flute and the pan flute. From there came the Mykola Lysenko Lviv National Music Academy, the flute department.
Beyond the academic flute path, Shumei plays the piano, the guitar and several wind instruments on his own. He started writing his own songs back in school. He dreamed of becoming a musician with a capital M, as he put it in one of his early interviews. As it turns out, that dream arrived relatively early and unexpectedly.
The 2022 breakthrough and Bilya Topoli
The start of the full-scale invasion became a reset point for many Ukrainian artists. For Shumei it became the starting point. He released the debut original track Tryvoha (Alarm) with a music video. That release did not yet generate major resonance, but it already mapped the sound: a lyrical ballad vocal plus flute in the arrangement plus a deep timbre.
The real lift came with the song Bilya Topoli (By the Poplar). It is a cover of a track by the Polish band Enej, dedicated by the Polish musicians to the Ukrainian soldiers who had died after 2014. Shumei's rendition went viral. The video pulled more than 22 million views on YouTube, landed in the trending feed and entered the top 100 on Apple Music Ukraine. In 2023 Oleh received a YUNA award in the Song of Indomitable Ukraine category for that cover. The whole thing happened within a matter of weeks.
In summer 2022 the artist joined a charity tour together with Laud and Ostap Drivko. The tour covered western Ukraine and parts of Poland. All proceeds went to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. It was not a PR move but the first serious touring experience for the artist, in which both the team and the way of holding a large audience came together at the same time.
Collaborations: Pivovarov, Karol, Ognevich, Vakarchuk
On 21 October 2022 a joint release with Artem Pivovarov appeared on YouTube. The song Oi Na Hori (Oh, on the Mountain). The first day brought over a million views. Within six months the count climbed to 8.3 million, and within a year it crossed 10 million. The composition became one example of a contemporary rereading of Ukrainian folklore.
On 14 November 2022 Shumei presented Malvy. It is a cover of Balada pro Malvy (The Ballad of Mallows): music by Volodymyr Ivasyuk, lyrics by Bohdan Hura, first performed by Sofia Rotaru in 1975 and later by Ani Lorak in 2014. Shumei's version was received very warmly, with a part of the comment threads naming it the best so far. That is a separate marker: a young artist takes on classical Ukrainian-language ballads and pulls it off stylistically.
A separate story unfolded with Tina Karol. The two artists shared the stage on multiple occasions. They recorded the joint songs Sterva and Dzvony. Karol gave Shumei the right to perform a Ukrainian-language version of her hit Vyshe Oblakov, and Shumei presented it as Vyshche Khmar at her concert in Kyiv. That track pulled 2.8 million views in a month. Volossia (Hair) followed separately, with 1.7 million views in the same period.
With Zlata Ognevich Shumei recorded Bureviiamy. The credited authors are Oleh Shumei, Gerald Estrada, Ognevich herself and Rebecca Mikhaeli. Within six months the YouTube video pulled 20 million views. In 2024 the duet picked up a YUNA award in the Best Duet / Collaboration category and a MUZVAR award for Best Creative Collaboration.
Summer 2024 added another high-profile entry. Okean Elzy re-released Toy Den (That Day) in the OE30 edition format together with Sviatoslav Vakarchuk, YAKTAK, KOLA, Jerry Heil and Shumei. Six voices on a single track, a folkloric foundation and a modern arrangement. The release fixed Shumei among the first-tier artists of the contemporary Ukrainian scene.
Discography
For now SHUMEI works mostly in the format of singles and collaborations, without a full-length studio album. But the catalogue already holds more than ten tracks with millions of views and several music videos that have entered the charts.

Concert activity in 2026
SHUMEI tours actively across Ukraine. The trips cover Ternopil, Lviv, Kyiv, Khmelnytskyi, Rivne, Ivano-Frankivsk and other regional capitals. Halls fill up. Onstage the artist performs accompanied by a live group of musicians, with the flute serving as the recognisable element of the sound.
The headline date of the season in Kyiv: 24 May 2026, Feels Garden, an open-air concert in the Feels format. The venue is on the territory of the VDNH exhibition centre, at 1A Akademika Hlushkova Avenue. Sales open at 800 UAH, with the upper category reaching 1700 UAH per seat. This is a full summer solo show, with a complete band setup and a programme split into two main parts plus encores. Other potential dates across Ukrainian cities are listed in the catalogue of concerts in Kyiv and other regions.
What to expect at the show
A SHUMEI concert is, first of all, the voice plus a live instrumental foundation. Pop vocal with a lyrical approach, flute parts as a deliberately recognisable element, folkloric motifs in the harmony. Onstage there is a group of professional musicians, not a backing track. The setlist is usually a mix: the major chart pieces (Bilya Topoli, Oi Na Hori, Bureviiamy, Malvy), newer tracks, and acoustic versions thrown in as a surprise from time to time.
Between songs Shumei talks to the audience extensively. In the early stretch of the career (since 2022) that part of the show centred mostly on the war and the memory of those who had died. As the repertoire expanded the topic range grew, but the personal and direct manner of delivery stayed.
Awards and recognition
The list of awards is already relatively dense for an artist who only stepped onto the major stage in 2022. Several of them date back to the childhood music career, others tie to events of the past few years.
| Year | Award / Event | Category |
|---|---|---|
| 2008 | International festival Zakhid — XXI Stolittia, Ivano-Frankivsk | Grand prix (at age 6) |
| 2011 | All-Ukrainian competition Novi Imena Ukrainy | Laureate-scholarship holder (at age 9) |
| 2015 | I All-Ukrainian Concertino-2015 | 1st prize, wind and percussion instruments |
| 2015 | Regional competition Spivocha Rodyna, Ivano-Frankivsk | Grand prix together with his father |
| 2023 | YUNA | Song of Indomitable Ukraine for Bilya Topoli |
| 2023 | MUZVAR | Best Creative Collaboration for Bureviiamy |
| 2024 | YUNA | Best Duet / Collaboration for Bureviiamy with Zlata Ognevich |
One separate episode in the career is a copyright incident around the song Mynaie Den, Mynaie Nich by Mykola Mozhovyi. Oleh performed it at one of the concerts without an official clearance. The composer's daughter, Olena Mozhova, raised the issue publicly. Shumei apologised, made a charity contribution and obtained an official clearance to perform the song. The matter was closed without further escalation.
